Is Xbox Really Making a Comeback? Or Is It Just Hype?

By now, we all know that on February 23, Asha Sharma replaced Phil Spencer and became the new CEO of Xbox. And honestly, within just a few days of stepping into the role, she made so many noticeable changes that the entire gaming community started paying attention again.

  • First of all, a few years back Microsoft had rebranded Xbox as “Microsoft Gaming.” But Asha Sharma reversed that decision, Xbox is now Xbox again. That might sound small, but for brand identity, it’s actually a big move.
  • Along with that, she reduced the price of Game Pass, which is clearly a very gamer-friendly decision. However, she also revised the launch strategy for Call of Duty. Going forward, new COD titles will not launch on Game Pass Standard on day one.
  • On top of that, she announced the next-generation Xbox, currently known as “Project X.” And she also ended the “This is an Xbox” campaign.

After all these changes, one thing is being said everywhere “Xbox is back.” But the real question is: is it actually back?

My Opinion: Probably Not

If you ask me, I don’t think Xbox is returning to its prime anytime soon. And there’s one major reason behind that.

Look, everything Asha Sharma is doing is good. It’s consumer-friendly, it makes sense, and it deserves appreciation. But these changes alone are not enough to revive Xbox.

If Microsoft truly wants Xbox to come back, they need to focus on one thing above everything else "games", especially high-quality exclusives.

Xbox’s Biggest Weakness

The biggest downside of Xbox right now is the lack of strong, must-play exclusive titles, it’s simple, if a platform doesn’t offer unique, high-quality games, why would anyone choose it?

For example:

  • People buy Nintendo for games like Mario and Zelda
  • People buy PlayStation for Spider-Man, God of War, The Last of Us

These aren’t just games they are reasons to buy the console.

Now Xbox can be more powerful, more affordable, and better value overall but none of that matters if the games aren’t compelling enough.

The Second Major Problem: PC Availability

Another big issue is that almost every Xbox game is also available on Windows, so, if someone can already play those games on a PC, why would they buy an Xbox?

This is why:

  • Xbox rarely becomes someone’s primary console
  • People usually buy Xbox only if they already own a PlayStation
  • And if someone has both a PlayStation 5 and a PC, they almost never feel the need to buy an Xbox

So again, what’s the real need for Xbox?

What Xbox Needs to Do

Xbox can still make a comeback, but it will require some tough decisions, and honestly, some of them might feel anti-gamer at first.

Here’s what they need to focus on:

  • Build high-quality exclusive games
  • Keep those games strictly on Xbox
  • Stop releasing everything on PC Day one

Because if you want to sell hardware, you need to give people a strong reason to buy it. And in the case of consoles, that reason is always games.

Nintendo is the perfect example. Even with so many handheld devices in the market, people still choose the Switch because its games are exclusive.

The Rule Is Simple

People are attracted to what’s unique.

If you offer the same things as everyone else, there’s no reason for anyone to choose you.

Final Thoughts

I’m not saying Asha Sharma’s changes are bad, far from it. They are great steps in the right direction, and I appreciate them But until Xbox solves its core issue ''strong exclusives'' this “comeback” will remain more hype than reality.

I’m not an industry expert, but I’ve been playing games for over 25 years. And from that experience, it’s pretty clear what works in this industry, If Xbox doesn’t fix this soon, there’s a real chance it could fade out of the market in the next 10–15 years.

So yeah, if Xbox truly wants to come back, start making exclusives.
